“If heaven lies on Earth, it is here.” (Is duniya mein agar jannat hai, to bas yahi hai... yahi hai... yahi hai)

Few places justify that saying quite like Kashmir. After seven years, I found myself back in this paradise — not by coincidence, but by calling. This time, it was through a photography expedition with www.thescape.biz, masterfully led by Nilakkhya Dutta, where I set out to rediscover the lesser-known corners of the valley.
Over a span of seven days, our journey traced the northern and southern reaches of Kashmir, brushing the borders of Jammu. Two names stood out in luminous memory — Gurez Valley and Warwan Valley.
If Gurez is nature’s poetry, then Warwan is its silent verse — wild, untamed, and profoundly beautiful. Together, they reveal Kashmir’s purest, most soulful form — where beauty is not staged, but lived.
Gurez - For photographers, writers, or seekers of silence — Gurez is not just a destination; it’s an awakening.
Hidden deep within the northern Himalayas, Gurez Valley remains one of India’s most spectacular yet least explored landscapes. Located about 125 km from Srinagar, it takes around six hours by road — a drive that unfolds like a living painting of alpine forests, winding rivers, and stone-built villages.
Perched along the Kishanganga River, Gurez is a symphony of raw natural charm and quiet resilience. Its proximity to the Line of Control lends a unique character — remote yet welcoming, serene yet strong.
Since my last visit in 2018, the transformation has been evident. The roads are now paved, and basic infrastructure has improved massively. But Gurez’s true essence remains timeless — here, time slows down, and you rediscover the meaning of peace.
Dominating the skyline is the Habba Khatoon Peak, named after the legendary Kashmiri poetess and symbol of love and strength. Her spirit seems to watch over the valley, echoing in every breeze that passes through the pine forests.
Venture further north, and you’ll reach Tulail Valley, Gurez’s more remote sibling. Here, lush meadows meet snow-laden ridges, and clusters of wooden homes stand against vast mountain backdrops. Due to its border proximity, entry remains restricted, but the open sections offer breathtaking views, authentic cultural experiences, and pristine trekking routes that few have set foot on.

Warwan Valley - While Gurez enchants with poetry, Warwan Valley speaks in silence.
Nestled deep in the Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir, this remote paradise is one of the Himalayas’ most pristine secrets. Reaching Warwan demands patience — and perhaps, a little courage. Linked to the Kashmir Valley through Margan Top Pass at an altitude of nearly 3,700 meters, the journey itself is an adventure through high-altitude passes, glacial rivers, and unending horizons.
Flanked by the Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan ranges, Warwan’s charm lies in its rawness — crystal-clear streams, terraced fields, wooden villages, and locals who greet you with a warmth that modern cities have long forgotten.
Infrastructure here is minimal — narrow mountain roads, no electricity, and basic home stays. Yet, that is the beauty of it. Warwan teaches you to slow down, to appreciate simplicity, and to reconnect with a way of life that flows in harmony with the earth.

Reflections — Where Silence Speaks Louder than Words
Both Gurez and Warwan remind travelers that the Himalayas are more than just mountains — they are living stories, shaped by time, isolation, and quiet resilience. They are not places to conquer, but to surrender to. Not destinations to check off a list, but experiences that stay long after the journey ends.
In Gurez, you’ll learn peace. In Warwan, you’ll find perspective. And in both, you’ll rediscover yourself — somewhere between the rivers, ridges, and the rhythm of untouched nature.
Final Thoughts
Some journeys are about escaping the world. Others are about finding your place in it.
My journey through Gurez and Warwan Valleys was both — an exploration of landscapes and self. If you’re seeking a destination untouched by commercialization, where nature and humanity coexist in rare harmony, these valleys are your answer.
In the heart of the Himalayas, I found something words can barely describe — stillness that speaks.
Some shots enroute and a photos without Dal Lake is a sin.
