A strong come back film from Rajiv Menon after a gap of 18 years. He choose mridangam as the core instrument, guru-sishya relationship with a pinch of reality show entertainment to give a neat feel good package. True to its title, this musical melody from AR Rahman is high on aspiration and spirit. The film follows the story of a young Dalit guy journey into the carnatic musical world is been beautifully executed to a larger extent. This lyric is pitch perfect way of describing his hurt and pain on his dream pursuing journey against all communal hurdles. "Eppo varumo enga kaalam eppo varum, eppo kuraiyumm enga baaram karaiym bhedam". A terrific yet restrained performances from Nedumudi Venu as Vembu Iyer (the guru) and GV Prakrash (sishya) played their part with conviction. There are many moments filled with warmth in a refreshing first half, especially the relatable father son relationship. Another biggest highlight is the diverse musical Thaala Mayam from ARR.
