Richard Osman's acclaimed debut novel, "The Thursday Murder Club," makes its cinematic debut as a "faithful adaptation" that effectively captures the book's distinctive blend of British wit, character-driven humor, and cozy mystery.

Set in Coopers Chase, a serene and exclusive luxury retirement village, the story follows a group of retirees who delve into various cold case investigations. One morning, a doorstep murder provides them with the opportunity to investigate a live case. What ensues is an entertaining, light-hearted narrative with a touch of intrigue as they unravel the mystery.

The characterization is well-executed, and the unlikely group delivers some comedic moments with ease. The story begins swiftly and progresses without unnecessary delays.

However, the film's lighthearted nature means not all characters are explored in depth. Like the original novel, it struggles in the final act, hastily tying up loose ends while setting the stage for a potential franchise.

Fans of traditional British mysteries, particularly those who enjoy Miss Marple, may appreciate this adaptation. Ultimately, it is a reasonably good story about aging and friendship, though it may not compare to "Only Murders in the Building" Season 1, which shares a similar premise.

Verdict - 3/5 (The band of merry pensioners)
